Treadmill Accidents
Although treadmills help millions of Americans stay fit while in the comfort of their home or gym, they are also responsible for thousands of injuries each year. According to reports from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, 2,600 children under the age of 5 were hospitalized from treadmill injuries from 2005 to 2007.
Treadmill related injuries can occur for a number of reasons, including: consumer misuse, manufacturing error, or installation in a hazardous environment. While consumer misuse is the most frequent cause for accidents, it is part of the manufacturer’s responsibility to explain the potential safety hazards of their product. If consumers were made aware of the risks of treadmills, the number of accidents would be dramatically reduced.
Treadmill Safety Tips
For you and your family’s protection, we have compiled some safety tips recommended by the USCPSC for treadmill use:
- Always unplug your treadmill when it is not in use
- Operate the treadmill when children are not around
- Never let a child play on or near a treadmill unsupervised
- Teach older children proper treadmill usage, and inform them of safety risks
- Place treadmill in a room where children are not allowed, or, install a protective barrier around it (such as a child safety fence)
While these tips are designed to reduce the risks associated with treadmills, accidents can still occur.
