Thousands of defective portable A/Cs with fire risks recalled in the US

Approximately 466,000 units of possibly defective “portable air conditioners” are being recalled by LG Electronics USA Inc., after being notified that they could catch fire during use, a report on cpsc.gov stated on December 16.

According to reports, at least three different models of the LG products may emit excessive heat and catch fire. Though LG and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have not been informed of injury complaints from the recalled A/Cs, the products have been blamed for four fires that resulted in $380,000 worth of property damage. Consumers were advised to inspect the model number of their unit, located on the left side panel of the unit. LG will address the recall by providing free service repair to affected owners. Owners have been momentarily advised to refrain from using the air conditioners while they wait for the fix.

Aside from property damage, serious injuries could also be a tragic side-effect when families unknowingly use a defective household appliance.
