WHAT CAR INSURANCE DO I NEED?

Few of us appreciate car insurance until we are involved in a collision; then, we can only hope to have enough. Most states require minimum amounts of liability coverage to pay for injuries and property damage you cause to others. Effective November 1, 2004, Oklahoma requires 25-50-25 ($25,000 personal injury per person, $50,000 personal injury per accident, and $25,000 property damage). Unfortunately, $25,000 will not cover medical costs of any significance and may not cover the cost of many vehicles these days. Anyone who has assets to protect needs more than the minimum in liability insurance.

For your own and your passengers' protection when you are hurt by an uninsured or underinsured driver, you will want to have as much uninsured/underinsured motorist protection ("UM") as you can afford.

The Oklahoma Legislature has determined that UM is extremely important coverage. In Oklahoma, your policy must include UM unless you sign a rejection of the coverage, and you must be offered the same amount of UM as you have purchased in liability coverage. UM will pay medical bills and lost wages, as well as compensate you for pain and suffering and the permanency of your injury. Severe injuries lead to astronomical expenses, so UM is vitally important coverage for a relatively inexpensive premium.

Medical payments coverage pays medical bills for anyone in your vehicle without regard to who was at fault in a collision. Even if you have health insurance, you can collect "med pay" in addition, and it can certainly help fill in the gap when you have a deductible on your health plan.

Collision and comprehensive will compensate you for damage to your own car. You need to decide how much you can afford depending on the value of your car. You can reduce the rates by electing a higher deductible.
