The automaker company Chrysler Group refused a government request to recall 2.7 million of its Sports Utility Vehicles, which were claimed to be unsafe.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the design of both the Jeep Grand Cherokee 1993-2004 and Jeep Liberty’s 2002-2007 gas tank is unsafe. Controlled by the Italian automaker Fiat, Chrysler argued that it is a common design to have a gas tank placed at the back of the rear axle. The NTHSA began looking into the gas tank design of the mentioned models after several were involved in fatal vehicle crashes involving fires. The Center for Auto Safety said the problem can be addressed by installing a 3mm steel skid, a fuel tank check valve, and an improved fuel filler hose. This is estimated to cost Chrysler about $300 million however.
