16-year-old girl seriously hurt after drinking contaminated Hiland Dairy milk

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – A 16-year-old girl receiving treatment for autism-related health issues sustained serious injuries after drinking contaminated chocolate milk last week.

According to KFOR, the victim was one of over 50 children who were injured as a result of a batch of Hiland Dairy chocolate milk being contaminated with Synergex, a sanitizer used for cleaning equipment.

The victim, a 16-year-old from the Oklahoma City metro area, had received the milk as part of her lunch at St. Anthony’s Hospital while in treatment for autism-related concerns.

She was left with severe burns to her throat and mouth, and may also have suffered stomach ulcers. Doctors say that the victim may require a feeding tube, and that they are uncertain of what the long-term effects of the chemical might be.

Andy Campbell, a lawyer representing the victim and her family, stated that the chemical found in the milk is similar to the drain cleaner Drano.

Campbell stated that children, including those of a very young age or those with developmental disorders, are the most likely to suffer effects from the contamination, as they may not be able to recognize the chemical taste in the milk.

Hiland Dairy has recalled the batch of contaminated milk.

The lawsuit, filed yesterday, is seeking compensation for the victim’s medical bills and damages for the pain and suffering that the family has gone through. Additionally, the victim and her family want to know exactly how and why the contamination occurred.

According to KFOR, Hiland Dairy did not immediately return calls for comment.
