Former Lakers point guard, Fisher, joins OKC Thunder

The Oklahoma personal injury lawyers of the Abel Law Firm have learned that former Los Angeles Lakers point guard, Derek Fisher, has signed on to play basketball for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The 37-year-old professional basketball player made a statement about the change, and said that he hopes to be able to positively contribute to the Thunder, and help them achieve an NBA title. Fisher has five NBA titles under his belt, and believes that his age was a large factor as to why the Lakers traded him, initially to the Rockets.

Fisher was bought out of his contract with the Rockets, and ultimately joined the Thunder. Oklahoma City’s record is currently ranked third in the NBA. The team has welcomed Fisher with open arms, and is continuing to put forth immense effort in every game played.

Schools in Oklahoma City begin longer winter break

Oklahoma City Public Schools recently started their new, longer winter break.  On Friday, students at public schools in the city were released for a 4-week long winter break.  A new semester will begin on January 4.

The school district decided to change their schedule to include longer breaks throughout the school year and a shorter summer vacation in an attempt to improve student performance.  Before Thanksgiving, Oklahoma City students had a new, two-week long fall break in October.

Within the breaks, the district is providing 3-day long optional, intersession classes.  In October, about 4,300 students in the district attended the classes to catch up.  Afterwards, teachers said the students left feeling better and more relaxed about their school work.  Winter break intersession classes began this Monday.

The Oklahoma personal injury lawyers of the Abel Law Firm want to wish all a very happy winter break and holiday season.  NewsOK has more information on Oklahoma City Public Schools’ winter break.

Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed Over UCF Football Player’s Death

The family of a University of Central Florida football player who died during team practice has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the school.

Accoridng to court documents, the parents of Ereck Plancher claim the UCF Athletics Association is responsible for their son’s death. They are attempting to prove that coaches pushed Plancher excessively at his final practice despite knowing that he had a sickle cell trait. A former UCF wide receiver testified Monday that Plancher gasped for breath, fell to his knees, and struggled before collapsing during his final workout.

Anthony Davis also testified that UCF coach George O’Leary ordered all water and trainers out of the indoor field house during the practice on March 18, 2008. Davis said the coach was yelling obscenities at Plancher as the player’s eyes rolled back into his head and he collapsed during an obstacle course drill.

Attorneys of the UCF Athletics Association claim Plancher died from a congenital heart defect, not as a result of the workout.
