Man drives pickup through Tulsa protest, sends two people to hospital

Posted on Monday, June 1st, 2020 at 3:15 am

TULSA, OK – A man sent two people to the hospital and possibly injured others when he drove his pickup truck through a crowd of protesters tonight on Interstate 244, according to a report by Tulsa World.

The driver of a red pickup pulling a horse trailer attempted to inch through a crowd of people gathered on I-244, bumping people along the way. When he couldn’t make his way through the group, the driver threatened the crowd and placed a gun on his dashboard.

Demonstrators grew angry at the threat and began to throw water bottles at the pickup, which then sped through the group, hitting people.

At least two people were hospitalized, and others were possibly hurt.

Law enforcement officials did not initially stop the driver of the pickup, an action which was described by one of the leaders of the Black Lives Matter event, Eric Gill, as “a microcosm of what we have been going through, [police brutality].”

Oklahoma Highway Patrol said they later stopped the driver of the pickup truck and that they were in the process of questioning him.

The rallies are a response to the killing of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis and in commemoration of the 99th anniversary of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.

Floyd’s killing has sparked a wave of protests across the nation against police brutality.
