Trucks can drive in the left lane in Oklahoma, but only for passing other vehicles. There are a few other scenarios in which trucks can drive in the left lane, but they generally cannot just drive in the left lane for no reason. Trucks in the left lane create many hazards and safety risks, and they should drive in the right lane whenever possible.

Keep reading below to learn all the rules about trucks driving in the left lane in Oklahoma.

Overview of Oklahoma’s Left Lane Laws

The rules in Oklahoma are pretty clear when it comes to driving in the left lane. In fact, these rules apply to all motor vehicles and not just trucks. Under Oklahoma law 47 OK Stat § 11-309 (2025), a vehicle shall not drive in the left lane except when overtaking and passing another vehicle.

This rule applies on all interstate highways, although there are a few exceptions.

Exceptions to Oklahoma’s Left Lane Law

While trucks must typically drive in the right lane, there are a few exceptions when they can be in the left lane.

Trucks can drive in the left lane when:

  • Passing another vehicle
  • Merging or moving over for merging traffic
  • Preparing to exit the highway on the left
  • Traffic flow and volume require use of the left lane for safety
  • Inside a municipality (not on an interstate)

The law in Oklahoma also gives the Oklahoma DOT the authority to place signs in certain areas that direct slower traffic to use a specific lane. Truckers and other vehicles must obey those signs, and failure to do so could result in a citation.

Penalties for Driving in the Left Lane

Drivers who violate Oklahoma’s left-lane law can face penalties, including a traffic citation, fines, court costs, and other applicable fees. The total amount owed can vary depending on the circumstances of the violation and any additional charges.

Law enforcement officers can pull drivers over solely for violating the left-lane law. No other traffic violation needs to occur for an officer to initiate a traffic stop and issue a citation. This means that even if a driver is following the speed limit and obeying all other traffic laws, they can still be ticketed for improperly driving in the left lane.

Why Are Trucks in the Left Lane So Dangerous?

One reason why the law prohibits trucks from driving in the left lane is because of the dangers created by this practice. Trucks in the left lane create many risks due to their size, weight, and large blind spots.

When a truck drives in the left lane, it poses several hazards, such as:

  • Traffic backups, especially when trucks get side-by-side
  • Dangerous passing on the right side
  • Massive blind spots
  • Rollover and control risks

When a truck drives in the left lane, it creates dangers for everyone on the road. The risks of a devastating truck accident increase significantly. Additionally, the fact that the truck was in the left lane could be used as evidence of the truck driver’s negligence. This could put both the driver and the trucking company on the hook for any damages and injuries resulting from the accident.

What To Do After a Truck Accident

If you have been hurt in a truck accident in Oklahoma, you could be entitled to recover significant compensation for your medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more. However, these claims can be extremely complex, and the insurance company will do everything they can to minimize the value of your case.

After an accident, you want to make sure you protect both your health and safety as well as your legal rights. You should:

  • Call 911 to report the accident
  • Get medical attention immediately for any injuries
  • Take photos of the truck, your vehicle, and any other vehicles involved
  • Not talk to the trucking company or their insurance company without a lawyer
  • Seek help from an experienced personal injury lawyer
