Ex-NBA star Blaylock jailed after deadly Georgia accident

Ex-NBA All-Star Daron “Mookie” Blaylock was jailed without bond after he surrendered on June 10 for driving while intoxicated.

The former NBA player was arrested and jailed after being involved in a deadly head-on collision on May 31 that killed a woman in Jonesboro. According to Blaylock’s attorney, his client blacked out before the crash happened.

The ex member of the New Jersey Nets is also charged with driving with a suspended license, making an improper lane change, and median lane crossing in connection to the fatal crash. Authorities also reported that Blaylock was wanted for failure to respond to other DUI charges against him.

Our legal team at the Abel Law Firm understands how hard it is to lose a loved one in a car accident, especially to a driver who choose to make reckless decisions while behind the wheel. We send our sincere condolences to those affected by this loss.

Car crash kills OKC officer

An Oklahoma City Police Officer died a day after a van in which he was a passenger rolled over in Seminole County the afternoon of April 14.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the accident happened at around 5 p.m. when a van on east I-40 lane blew out its left rear tire. The van spun 180 degrees to the right, before traveling down an embankment, crashing into a fence, and rolling over. Four of the passengers, including officer Chad Peery, were ejected from the van and sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical. Officer Peery succumbed to critical injuries the following day, while other passengers are now in stable condition.

Troopers noted seat belts were used and that the van had airbags, which according to them did not deploy during the crash.

The loss of such an esteemed figure is tragic, and the thoughts of our team at the Abel Law Firm go out to those affected by this loss.

Two injured in accident involving three vehicles

At least two persons were reportedly hurt in an accident that occurred in Ada involving three vehicles the afternoon of March 27.

According to Patrol Officer Brad Rhoads’ report, a driver traveling eastbound allegedly ran a red light, causing them to strike a southbound vehicle. The originally eastbound driver then struck another vehicle. Witnesses said that north and southbound traffic had a green light while eastbound traffic had a red light when the accident happened. The first two drivers were brought to the hospital for injuries they sustained while the third reportedly did not sustain any injuries.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation will examine the blood drawn from the alleged offending driver, as Rhoads surmised that they were under the influence of intoxicants.

Unfortunately, reckless drivers, including those driving under the influence, all too often cause innocent people serious harm in car accidents. Enid Fire Department and Life EMS personnel responded to the crash scene to rescue 41-year-old Montra Smith, who suffered serious head injuries from the crash and had no pulse when responders arrived. A traffic officer also noted the smell of alcohol coming from Smith, but no charges were made immediately after the accident.

Remembrance ceremony takes place in Oklahoma City

Yesterday was the 17th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing. On April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh set off a bomb inside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building killing 168 people.

The bombing shook the state of Oklahoma, and fear for safety was felt by people all over the state. The Oklahoma City Memorial Building was erected as a tribute to the innocent victims of the bombing. Each year on April 19th at 9:02 a.m. the city observes 168 seconds of silence to honor the victims.

The 17th annual Remembrance Ceremony took place yesterday at the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. People gathered at the building to distribute flowers to the memorial site, where a chair for each victim is sprawled out across a lawn. Timothy McVeigh was convicted of the bombing, and was executed in 2001.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol celebrates 75th birthday

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol was founded on April 20, 1937, and this year it celebrates it’s 75th birthday.

One of the things that brought the Oklahoma Highway Patrol into the national spotlight was the arrest of the Oklahoma City bomber, Timothy McVeigh. An Oklahoma Highway Patrol officer was working in Oklahoma City when he noticed a vehicle without it’s proper tags traveling on the roadways. He pulled the vehicle over, and evidently caught the notorious bomber within 75 minutes of the bomb exploding.

Although the technology has changed throughout the years that the patrol has been in place, their main focus has been maintained. That focus is centered on traffic safety. Patrol officers are still trying to maintain order on roadways throughout the state of Oklahoma.
